LADIES IN RED

To raise awareness about heart health

These celebrities aren't donning their red dresses on the catwalk because they have turned their hand to modelling, nor are they strutting their stuff in celebration of the forthcoming Valentine’s event; these ladies are participating in an annual all-star runway extravaganza to promote heart-health awareness among woman.

A selection of celebs, which included Kelly Osbourne, Tony Braxton, Kris Jenner and her two younger fashion-savvy daughters Kylie and Kendall to name a recognisable few, kicked off the start of New York Fashion Week by striking a pose at The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection Fashion Show, which took place on 06 February 2013. Designers included Kamali Kulture, Pamella Roland and Badgley Mischka.

The whole ethos of this web-space -  forcailini.blogspot.com -  is to promote  my two passions -  health & fashion – so I felt this event, hosted by the National Institute of Health, was an important one to feature on my blog. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of women in the UK and USA. You may be surprised to hear that women are three times more likely to die of heart disease than breast cancer. I believe fashion is a great vehicle to raise awareness about this and I think these ladies look gorgeous; I just wish I had been invited!

Fellow cailini: protect yourself from heart disease!
  •  Aim for five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day
  • Aim to have one portion of oily fish each week. Oily fish, which is rich in omega-3 fats includes salmon, herring, sardines, mackeral, pilchards, trout and fresh (not tinned) tuna
  • Increase your intake of beans and pulses
  • Limit your intake of processed fats/foods such as chocolate, pastries, fast-food
  • Include more whole-grains in your diet  e.g. wholegrain breads and cereals, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta
  • Reduce your salt intake
  • Keep your alcohol within sensible limits
  • Try to give up smoking
  • Be physically active

Keep an eye on your health,
as well as the latest fashion trends!
