BREAKFAST AT COLLEEN'S

A Banana & Almond Smoothie

My usual breakfast of choice is a bowl of hot, creamy porridge or a bowl of No Added Sugar Alpen with a sprinkle of omega seeds and plenty of fresh semi-skimmed milk, but as the weather gets warmer, I find my palate and appetite changes; I no longer fancy anything hot or too heavy first thing in the morning, but I would never succumb to skipping breakfast, I just wouldn't function, so instead I go for something a little more light and refreshing like yoghurt and fruit, or a fresh breakfast smoothie - it’s better to eat something than nothing!

I've recently taken a liking to the taste of almond milk and sometimes recommend it to clients who cannot tolerate lactose or dislike cows milk. Has anyone else tried it? I also love making smoothies and often experiment with different easy ideas. My latest smoothie adventure involves simply blending the following ingredients until smooth to make a quick, easy and yummy breakfast smoothie:

175mls Almond Milk – (a good source of calcium, although lower in protein than cows milk or soya milk)
8-10 Almond nuts – (provides some protein and fibre, and they are a source of healthy fats)
1 whole medium sized banana – (great source of vitamins and fibre and one of your 5-A-Day of fruit & veg.)
A dash of nutmeg – (perfect for taste in many milky recipes)

If you want it a bit sweeter, you could add half a teaspoon of honey.
Enjoy with a small handful of almonds

A Healthy Breakfast -  the best start to your day
“Breakfast” literally means “breaking the fast”. It is often said to be the most important meal of the day, yet up to one third of us regularly miss this meal.  If I missed breakfast, I would not be a pleasant person to work with or live with. Breakfast tops up the energy stores you have used up during your beauty sleep, and it provides you with the mental and physical energy you need for your busy day ahead; it also controls your appetite so that you don’t wonder off regrettably to the vending machine around 10.30/11am!

Did you know that it has been shown that people who eat breakfast have a more balanced diet than those who skip breakfast, are less likely to be overweight, and tend to lose weight more successfully? It’s true, studies have proven it.

So, no excuses about not being able to face breakfast in the morning, or about you not having time to make or prepare it; if you can make time to blog and shop for fashion, you can make time to have breakfast!

Do you eat breakfast?  I’m curious to know what you have!

Later x

    1. It's definitely great as a snack too. I have it before I go on the treadmill as well. No need to apologize about your English, I understood what you said perfectly.

  3. So do you put the almonds in the mixture or eat them on the side? or both?

that does seem pretty easy either way. i might - i might give that a try.

i am a heavy eater - i adore food and i am getting better but every meal is my favourite! I adore the english breakfast - didn't they used to say if you want to eat well in england then eat their breakfast three times a day!

But i adore a proper buffet as well. I am not on the right track am i...
But in Asia growing up, breakfast is not differentiated perse from other meals so I eat "normally" some days and have a curry. ( you are freaking out right? LOL)

But I suppose that is why you have the figure you do!

I will let you know when I make it and let you know xxx

    1. Both - almonds in the mixture and on the side. Nah not freaking out lol...I love a good cooked English breakfast and buffets are the best aren't they? For me though the key is moderation (so only do it occasionally) and portion control (when you do have it, don't go crazy with the portions). It's what I call damage limitation. I love food as much as I love fashion! Yeah let me know how you get on xx

  4. I often skip breakfast and indulge during brunch but the idea is to keep energy at the steady level so it's understandable to keep it healthy and sweet. I need to give the smoothie a try. xx

  5. You'll be pissed but to be honest - I never, NEVER eat breakfast...:) Guilty as charged. I have a cup of coco and then I don't eat anything till noon or 2 p.m. If I eat breakfast, I get more hungry during the day and I eat more. I know, I've tried it... But I am trying to clean up my eating habits because I've suddenly got freaked out about my health and fruit smoothies seem a perfect substitution for my coco routine. I had one a while back - an orange and cumber (and maybe a carrot, but I'm not sure) one. You should try that, that was the the best liquid veggie fruit mix I've ever tasted!

    1. You're not the first person to tell me that eating breakfast makes you more hungry actually - I find that really interesting and should research that a bit more. I think smoothies are a good introduction to breakfast if you don't usually eat it.

  6. Will be trying this out, normally i don't eat breakfast i heard people say it's not good but am trying to break this habit. Almond and alpro soya milk has been my favorite these days, i noticed having the normal skimmed or whole milk does not do any good to my digestive system at all they even make me add more weight lol, usually am not a fan of soya milk but alpro made me fall in love with soya.

    1. oooh yes I experiment with soya milk too - it's slightly sweeter, which is always a good thing in my book. I've made this with soya too; just try and opt for the unsweetened versions though hun.

  7. I've seen this almond milk in the supermarket and was thinking about trying it and your smoothie recipe sounds like a great way to liven it up! I like to have cereal and toast every day but if I'm staying in a hotel the occasional full English is always a treat. On holiday I'm a fan of the buffet breakfasts with all kinds of fresh fruit, omelettes and wonderful French pastries.

It consists of four tablespoons of oats, two spoons of grated almonds, yoghurt, some milk and seasonal fruits like strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, ... It gives me a lot of energy for the whole morning, I'm fully sated but not overeated! Kisses from Vienna,

  10. breakfast is my favourite part of the day haha! I have so many different things every day! i'm either making myself overnight oats with loads of fruit & nuts! Or i'm having porridge. Omelette is also one of my favs! With a lot of veggies! I love making it in the omelette-maker by tupperware, you can make your omelette in the microwave with it! No oil or fat needed! so many options! :)

  13. This looks like an absolutely and healthy breakfast, dear Colleen! And I sure like you mention that it´s healthier to have daily a breakfast and that this is really better for a good weight :) I have daily a breakfast, too, but I prefer to eat a piece of wholemeale with butter and honey of our region.

  18. This smoothie looks delish! I never skip breakfast, even if I am not hungry in the morning, I used to when I was in high school and it was not good, neither I looked good nor I felt good. I prepare smoothies, say like the one you have here (which I will try) and that I take as my 'juice' because I still need to chew, to eat something solid :) but I love them as a compliment to my meal.
I'd love to stay in touch so I will look you up on Bloglovin, can follow you on FB too but to be honest, I've had a hard time keeping up with it. My favorites: Pintrest (my new 'thing' which I see you have and following you there too) and Instagram. :)
Thaks for your visit :) Happy Sunday!
