NEW YEAR STYLE RESOLUTION?

No more bags.......... I'm serious........!

Sophie Hulme Mini Tote

First of all, may I take this opportunity to say ‘Happy New Year’ to all my lovely and loyal readers. I hope you enjoyed (and can remember) your night of welcoming in 2014!

Now, I know I've written a post about justifying my expenditure on bags (here), and you were very kind in convincing me that I deserved the Anya Hindmarch bag, but I just can’t justify this Sophie Hulme purchase, I really can’t, as much as I love it and as much as you try to convince me otherwise! In fact, I’m not completely blameless here because I've seen this bag on more than one occasion in Selfridges and on one or two other blogs, and I have just settled with admiring and not buying, however, Peet, over at Forpeetssake, introduced me to a blog a couple of weeks ago where I spotted the bag again in the hands of Micah Gianelli – a super-sassy fashion blogger whom I now have a girl-crush on may I add. Well, envying Micah donning the larger version of this bag with such effortless chic, coupled with an irresistible sale at Fortnum and Mason in London, resulted in the versatile Sophie Hulme mini tote gracing my bag closet!

I wrapped the bag as a Christmas present, attaching a gift tag inscribed with the words ‘To me, you deserve it, from me’ - has anyone else ever done that or, dare I say it, is that just me? When I opened it in front of my dad, I informed him it was from Topshop so that I didn't receive all the usual verbal abuse questioning why I needed another over-priced bag. He accepted where I said it was from, which unsettled me slightly as it begged the age-old question: why pay so much for a bag that looks like it’s from Topshop or Zara. Of course, you are just paying for the brand name (Sophie Hulme is a British, twenty-something fashion designer from London), I know that as much as the next shopping addict/fashion victim, but if you think too deeply about this concept, it would most certainly take the pleasure and excitement out of shopping, right?

My friends and family always ask me whether  I prefer shoes or bags; I've always struggled with this question and found the difficulty of answering it nearly on par with that unthinkable scenario question my peers used to ask me at school: if your mum and dad were hanging off a cliff, who would you save? Well I've finally made my decision, not about which parent I’d save, about whether the preference is bags or shoes; it's definitely bags that I get the most buzz from, in addition, I can wear a chic bag all day without feeling uncomfortable, unlike these Louboutins!!

What do you prefer – bags or shoes, and do you have a style-related new year's resolution?

  1. I haven't written a gift note but I have bought loads of pressies for me in the past! Too cute. Nice bag - you are keeping me trendy bc I haven't heard of her properly before. I went on her website and I found it hard to navigate but got there in the end...

Suits you and I can see you getting a lot of use out of it. But you know I am not an enabler at all. If anything I am saying think carefully - the suzie orman of bloggers.

My resolution is no junk. I just can't bear it anymore. I love beautiful things but I wont waste space nor money or storage on stuff that wont be celebrated.

But for the record while i love shoes i just can't bear pain so bags although with street crime I worry about the bag getting stolen let alone the goods inside so I still can't choose. This is a bit Sophie's choice guurl! HNY x

    1. Yes you're right, her website can be a little tricky at first, especially if you are surfing it on an iPad.

Oh yes, I don't need any more enablers in my life, just looked up that Ms Orman, very sensible indeed!

Sounds like a good resolution, I hope you stick to it for the sake of your newly renovated house! x

  4. Mom. I'd save my mom.:D And I prefer shoes, don't kill me.:) Although you raise a valid point - wearing a bag doesn't hurt, but still I'd go with shoes, I love my shoesies.:)

Thanks for the shutout, babe, and YES, that woman's gorgeous. And has incredible style!! I've seen her wearing this bag and I loved it then and I love it now. You look really badass with it actually and the whole outfit with the beanie and ripped jeans is very much my cup of tea. And I like the shots as well. I'm all praises today.:D

    2. Hi there.:) A long long time ago you've asked me about my make-up on my blue ombre post saying I should do a tutorial and I thought hard about it because I don't want to be like you-know-whos and not answer to people's questions and requests, but make-up tutorials are really way out of my comfort zone soooo...:) I did the next best thing: I found a make-up tutorial on YouTube that's similar. It's this one. It's basically just a regular smokey eye with some black shadow on the inner part of the lid as well. I'm pretty sure I found it on her channel but I can't find the damn video anymore! Anyhow, this would be the end of my chiming in, sorry for the long comment.:D And happy weekend!

  5. If my answer to this question were based on the size of my collections alone, I'd have to choose shoes - but I'm much fussier about bags. I refuse to buy anything that isn't high quality. I can't afford as many, so I have less. And that's how I justify purchases like this one - it doesn't matter if it looks like it came from Topshop or Zara, because almost everything does these days {those companies deserve credit for how well they make knock offs, even if what they make are exactly that.} The difference is how long it will last, and this beauty will be with you for years. In that, I think you deserve it :) With that said, nothing wrong with holding off on new bags for a while so you can properly enjoy this beauty - I've been in lust with Sophie Hulme pieces for about a year now and the idea of stumbling upon one on sale is thrilling to me. Happy New Year!

    1. That's interesting that you based the question around the size of your collection, in that case, mine would be shoes too, for the exact same reason, I tend to spend more on bags so I have a smaller collection, but I definitely enjoy buying and donning bags more. You are quite right about what you say about the Topshops and Zaras of this world - they do deserve credit and thank goodness for them I say - they allow me to afford Sophie Hulme bags!

  6. Good question, I think I prefer Shoes, or bags? No, bags... or shoes? Both of them. Bags and shoes are so importent for an outfit. They can changes the whole outfit.
Your bag is great and you absolutely deserve it. :)
Glad to found you in Instagram :)
    Have a nice weekend, Cla.

I've been using one bag for a few months now. Loll!
One of my new year resolution is to add one designer piece to my wardrobe. And my first choice would be a pair of loubs!

  10. Super badass lady, you put me in a quandary, choosing between bags and shoes. Haha. I don't do resolutions. I only list goals and aim to tick them one by one as the year draws to a close. This year, I aim to go for quality rather than quantity, as what Naomi aims to do. No more impulse purchases and will make sure to get the best quality I can afford. Because I managed to get hold of bags women (and their husbands and boyfriends on their behalf) would kill for, I am settling for shoes. I've always been a shoe woman and will stay that way :) Shoes can easily make or break an outfit. I buy expensive shoes and I won't apologise for that :D With the exception of my go-to high street brand Clarks--they always seem to have something for me. Or so I believe.

The bf jeans I think are one love we have in common (aside from palazzo and wide-legged). Long live bf jeans! Hahaha.

Hope you're having a great weekend xxx

  11. First, dear Colleen, my hearty congrats to your new bag and the best wishes for the New Year. You did it right that you gave the bag as a present to you, because you are the most important person in your life and you deserve only the best treatment and gifts. Wish you many pleasure with this bag and I think your dad shouldn´t take care in which way you spend your hard deserved money - although you look really young I´m sure you are grown up since a longer time :)

I can´t say what I prefer, as I like shoes and bags in the same way. But I think I´m able to spend more money for a bag as I believe that I wear a bag more often and (hopefully) longer than shoes ...

  15. I think you look gorgeous and totally alike with Kelly Rowland, I am sure many people have already told you that! I loved the shoes and the new bag! You know what? Unless you told me you were saving to build a house or to buy an airplane :) I would say "hey, save the money". But it's not the case, so, go ahead and give yourself the sweet taste of a nice bag! If I am a shoe or bag person? Shoe, definitely. But I started liking bags more and more. Both for bags and for shoes my number is now three figures. I don't want to say how many exactly because some people think I "show off" and I am not that kind of person. So leave it that way here :) I think the bag is gorgeous and look, the society wants us to feel guilty for having this happiness - I used to feel so, now? I just go on buying what I like! Life is so ethereal - I will enjoy it now, and I am glad you bought the bag! By the way, I started eating healthy things... argh, difficult, but needed :) denisesplanet com
