NATURAL HEALTHY FOODS

The official launch

Yum! Almond butter and sliced banana on rye bread: my lazy but delicious afternoon snack that I devoured after returning from the Natural Healthy Foods (NHF) launch event, which is where I bought the rye bread and almond butter from. NHF is an independent shop located in Birmingham’s Digbeth district, just underneath the Warehouse Café, a vegetarian restaurant I posted about here.

NHF stock a range of vegan, raw, gluten free, dairy free and sugar free foods and specialist products, and this weekend saw them welcome visitors in abundance to celebrate the official launch of their store. Now, most of you will know that I am not vegan nor a raw food activist, and I do not follow a gluten free, wheat free or dairy free diet, so please do not deduce that this blog post is about me advocating this type of eating; I’m just a curious foodie who enjoys consuming a variety of healthy food (including some of these more specialist food options) and likes to actively support Birmingham-based businesses, especially those that are food/health-related.

At the launch, the public were treated to lots of tasters, vegan Indian tapas by the company Bombay Tapas, a glimpse of new products and a tour around their newly extended and renovated store, and I had the opportunity to meet one of the co-owners, Susan Waldron, to congratulate her on the success of her new venture in the wellness industry.

As I walked around the store, I snapped away at some of the products on offer, specifically those I’m sure I’ll be purchasing in weeks to come. If you do have a specialist diet, or if you are just a curious healthy foodie like me, this is definitely a great little place to do your weekly shop, and the staff are super friendly and equally as passionate about what they do, which is so refreshing.

Natural Healthy Foods is at 54-57 Allison Street, Digbeth, B5 5ST     www.naturalhealthyfoods.co.uk

  2. Mmmh I'm sure such a shop launch is very interesting. I have such a shop for health food right next to my house. With all this healthy food with my heart and stomach desires. Some people think healthy food from a special supermarket is more expensive. But is not at all.
And btw deer Colleen, you look style like ever. Have a very nice week

  3. Dear Colleen, you look very chic in your fall outfit! And although normally I don't like bananas I have to admit that I like icecream with bananas and the way you show the bananas here would be also my taste. Also the other things you show here would be for sure a try worth. Hopefully you enjoyed the fall so far and you had a good weekend!

    1. Thank you Rena - I prefer to eat bananas with something rather than on their own to be fair; I love a banana sandwich x

  4. Dear Colleen, I am pleased to get to know this shop! It speaks a lot to me, cause I loved all I like through you pictures! I loved your outfit too, you always look beautiful! And there it goes, because I have bad nourishing habits I was completely worn out last week, and still not feeling great. I told you, I am trying and trying to eat healthier things, but ended up with four cheese lasagna today. This shop will help me immensely, I know! Thank you for the answers, I loved them! Even to write to say thank you was a big thing to me, and I am not impolite, I think. I just have no energy, and I urgently need to change my lifestyle :( Hope you have a lovely week!

  5. i am having a bit of a hard time adjusting to food in the UK. I wonder what you might think of Korean food - do you know I just feel better there and it is healthy without trying to be and yet here I try sometimes but for some reason healthy food here feels like torture half the time. I never feel satisfied - hunger is never the true issue truth be told. what tempted me in those pics was that indian spicy food - healthy but yummy too! Hope you are well as always xx

    1. Welcome home Naomi! I know exactly what you mean. I've been to many 'healthy' food cafes in Birmingham and certainly London and I sometimes don't feel satisfied. I believe some of this is simply down to taste. If you find a meal quite bland, you could either be left wanting something else and/or just not wanting to finish it at all. I've never tried Korean food but I know it is famous for it's flavoursome ingredients, some quite high in salt may I add, but most based on vegetables and they include lots of soup which can be quite filling. I cook healthy at home and tend to be a little more relaxed when I eat out for this reason - I dont want to pay for something that just leaves me wanting a banoffee pie! x

  8. I would looooooooove to visit that shop! Oh I even consider coming to Digbeth (even though I have no idea were this is ;)) just to go there. I am a huge fan of healthy vegan food and this shop seems to be made for me. We have vegan shops around here too, but not a single one that is focusing on HEALTHY vegan products. Thanks for sharing this great review!
    Have a great weekend : )
